Pet Teeth Cleanings / COHAT
What is a COHAT?
A Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) or a professional dental cleaning, is a thorough, medically guided procedure designed to evaluate and treat the entire oral cavity in dogs and cats. Unlike cosmetic cleanings, a COHAT includes a detailed oral examination, ultrasonic scaling above and below the gumline, polishing, diagnostic imaging, a systematic assessment of each tooth, and examination of surrounding structures. Because the majority of dental disease occurs below the gumline, this process is essential for identifying conditions such as periodontal disease, tooth resorption, fractures, and other sources of oral pain that are not visible during a routine awake exam.
Why Anesthesia is Essential
General anesthesia is a critical component of performing a safe and effective professional dental cleaning. Anesthesia allows for a complete and pain-free evaluation, including dental probing and full-mouth diagnostic imaging, which are indispensable for diagnosing disease beneath the surface. Without anesthesia, it is not possible to safely clean the teeth or accurately diagnose and treat dental disease, making anesthesia-free cleanings both incomplete and potentially harmful.
Treatment & Monitoring
During a COHAT, anesthesia also enables precise and compassionate treatment of any disease identified, including tooth extractions, periodontal therapy, or other advanced procedures. Patients are closely monitored throughout anesthesia by trained veterinary professionals using modern monitoring equipment to ensure safety. By combining a professional dental cleaning with anesthesia, a COHAT provides the highest standard of care. Allowing for early detection, effective treatment, and meaningful improvement in your pet’s comfort, health, and overall quality of life.
