Orthodontics
What are Malocclusions?
Malocclusions are abnormal alignment of the teeth and jaws that should be evaluated by a board-certified veterinary dentist as early as possible. As your pet grows, their mouths develop rapidly, and even minor alignment issues can quickly progress into painful or damaging conditions. Early evaluation allows for timely identification of problems such as teeth contacting the palate, abnormal jaw relationships, or retained baby teeth that interfere with normal eruption of adult teeth. Addressing these concerns during growth provides the best opportunity to guide development and prevent long-term complications.
Functional Pet Orthodontics
In some cases, orthodontic movement may be recommended to correct the malocclusion and restore a normal bite. Veterinary orthodontics is focused on function and comfort, not cosmetics, and may involve techniques such as inclined planes, crown extensions, or other appliances designed to safely reposition teeth. These treatments are carefully planned and performed with the pet’s well-being as the priority, helping to eliminate abnormal tooth-to-tooth or tooth-to-mouth contact that can lead to pain, trauma, and infection.
Pain-Free Living for Every Pet
Every patient deserves a functional and comfortable bite. When teeth and jaws are properly aligned, pets can eat, play, and live without chronic discomfort or risk of injury to their oral tissues. Left untreated, malocclusions can result in significant pain, periodontal disease, and damage to the teeth or surrounding structures. Through early evaluation and appropriate intervention, veterinary dentistry aims to ensure that each dog and cat achieves a healthy, pain-free occlusion that supports lifelong oral health and quality of life.
