Board Certified Vet Dentist®
What is a Board Certified Vet Dentist®?
A Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist® is a veterinarian who has completed extensive advanced training and demonstrated specialized expertise in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. These specialists first earn a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, a four-year medical degree, following several years of undergraduate education. After veterinary school, they complete a rigorous, multi-year residency training program in veterinary dentistry under the direct supervision of a Diplomate Residency Director. Only after fulfilling all training requirements and successfully passing the comprehensive examination administered by the American Veterinary Dental College can they be recognized as a veterinary dental specialist.
A Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College has demonstrated advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of dental and oral conditions in animals. These specialists provide a higher level of care for patients with complex dental disease, oral pain, maxillofacial trauma, and other specialized conditions. The AVDC is responsible for establishing the standards required for board certification, as well as conducting the credentialing and examination process in dentistry and oral surgery to ensure that only veterinarians who meet these rigorous criteria achieve Diplomate status. The AVDC is recognized by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties as the official certifying body for veterinary dentistry in North America.
In addition to providing expert care for individual patients, Diplomates of the American Veterinary Dental College contribute to the advancement and prevention of oral disease in animals. They work closely with organizations such as the Veterinary Oral Health Council, which evaluates and awards its Seal of Acceptance to products proven to reduce plaque and tartar. Through clinical care, education, and research, board-certified veterinary dentists play a critical role in improving the oral health and overall well-being of dogs and cats.
